Mars on Oct 9

Image of Mars from 5:28 am, Sun. Oct 9. What I originally thought was a dust mote is in fact Olympus Mons, the highest and largest mountain and volcano in the solar system. I also thought the white streaks in the image were processing artifacts. However in comparing it to SkySafari set to the same time this morning and zoomed into Mars I was surprised to find that they are quite real.  The bright “rind” on the left hemisphere is some sort of artifact. It shows up immediately when sharpening with Registax – only goes away if no sharpening is done.  It is a known problem reported by planetary imagers on CloudyNights. The cause is not known but occurs with planets that have no atmospheres and lighting that occurs near opposition that somehow confuses AutoStakkert or Registax.  Solutions are to mask it out or to project backwards/fowards with WinJupos .
